about

In March 2020, the second month of the The Songwriters Circle's existence, the COVID-19 lockdowns dashed hopes of in-person performances AND club meetings indefinitely. In response to this supposed setback, club leadership turned completely towards fostering writing skills in songwriting and artistry. They aimed to maintain a sense of camaraderie, virtually. Despite the obstacles of working remotely for the 2020-2021 school year, the Songwriters Circle mapped out the course towards its first collaborative album: Escapisms.

The officers centered many RSO meetings around production for Escapisms. Topics included basic music production skills, foundational recording knowledge, and healthy singing technique. Many meetings were also devoted to fostering solo and collaborative songwriting. The SC officers aimed to include artists from a wide range of backgrounds, with some contributors having already released full albums and others having never written a song in their life.

The end result was 15 tracks composed of a wide variety of genres (including but not limited to bedroom pop, alternative folk, prog rock, and musical theater), each loosely following the theme of escapism. Every song is fully produced, most with drums, bass, keyboard, and guitar. These rich arrangements were accomplished through the generosity of the members themselves: member Adian Valdez contributed bass parts for 5 of the songs, Rosario Tarabi contributed lead and background vocals for 4 songs. One track even features the talents of 11 collaborators! After a round of fundraising, the ambitious projects were all sent to freelance musician and Circle alum Theresa Ambat for mixing and mastering.
